In THE BATTLE OF THE SAVOURY PIE, pizza controversially won, with chicken pie, steak pie, turkey pie and pasty coming next in the poll. Before compiling this poll, I didn't regard pizza as a pie but I stupidly allowed Wikipedia to seduce my thinking. I have to let the result stand though I clearly don't know my pastry from my dough!

Following the battle of the savoury pies, it's now the turn of sweet pies to do battle. This poll is only about dessert pies. And Wikipedia has taken a back seat in compiling this poll!

As with savoury pies, dessert pies are sweet baked dishes involving a pastry lining of the dish. Rightly or wrongly, I'm including cobblers, crisps/crumbles, flans and tarts as pies. And most culinary experts agree that a cheesecake is a type of pie, so cheesecake is included in the poll.

My favourite sweet pies are apple pie, blackberry pie, blackcurrant pie, cherry pie, custard tart, fruit flan, gooseberry crumble, mince pie (an English festive delicacy made from mincemeat, a mixture of fruit, spices and suet), pear tart, plum pie and rhubarb crumble, with raspberry pie being the dessert pie I most want to eat, especially if served with custard. I just love custard whether served hot or cold; it's the taste of vanilla.

My least favourite sweet pies are banoffee pie, cream pie (unless my own cream pies!), key lime pie and pumpkin pie, with cheesecake being the dessert pie I most don't want to eat. Cheese is for the main meal or the cheese board, not for the dessert.

I've never made a dessert pie, I can't make pastry. Generally I have my dessert pies with lashings of hot custard, though I won't pour hot custard over a cold custard tart.
