Fast food restaurant advertising signs in Bowling Green, Kentucky:
In THE BATTLE OF THE CHEESE, cow milk hard cheese comfortably won, with cow milk soft cheese, sheep milk cheese and smoked cheese coming next in the poll. Thanks to @CuriousHer, it seems I've been fooled with Woo Pig Brie, a pig milk cheese. Woo Pig Brie cheese doesn't exist; news of its making was an April Fools' Day hoax and I fell for it in November!
It's now the turn of fast food to do battle. Fast food is, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, "easily prepared processed food served in snack bars and restaurants as a quick meal or to be taken away." It is mass-produced food with speed of service as its essence whether eaten on the premises, taken away or delivered. For fast food, think McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, KFC, Pizza Hut, Domino's, Taco Bell, Dunkin' Donuts, Subway and Greggs.
Fast food, a little unfairly, gets equated with junk food. Junk food is food, often served fast, that's high in calories, fat, salt and sugar and low in fibre, minerals, protein and vitamins. Junk food is unhealthy food if eaten as a main diet. Fruit and salad are fast food but are far from junk food. But a lot of fast food is junk food.
To make the poll more manageable, it's only concerned with hot savoury fast foods. The post isn't concerned with cold fast foods like sandwiches, kimbap and sushi nor with sweet fast foods like candy floss (aka cotton candy), churros, doughnuts (donuts to my American friends), funnel cake, muffins, sticks of rock, toffee apples and waffles.
Also there are no fast food combinations like burger and fries, chips with curry sauce, gravy or mushy peas, curry and rice, fish and chips, and pie and chips in the poll. The poll is only concerned about single fast food items.
My favourite kinds of fast foods are a bacon butty (bacon has to be crispy though), Bitterballen (a Dutch treat), burrito, chip butty, chips, Cornish pasty, crêpe/galette, jacket potato (with baked beans, cheese or tuna mayonnaise as a filling), halloumi fries, mushy peas with vinegar (a Nottingham delicacy), nachos, pizza, ramen, samosa and toasted sandwiches (a cheese and onion toastie for me), with a cheeseburger being my most favourite kind of fast food to eat. I do like a McDonald's cheeseburger - it's the gherkin that does it for me!
McDonald's Spicy Double Cheeseburger:
My least favourite kinds of fast foods are kebabs (too greasy) and particularly fried chicken. KFC fried chicken is the worst fast food I've ever eaten.
What are your most and least favourite kinds of fast foods?
How often do you eat fast food?
What is your favourite fast food restaurant chain?
Generally I'm not keen on fast food, though I'll eat it if in a hurry or there's no alternative like at a fairground or a sporting event. I much prefer slower and even slow food.
Despite the shock after seeing Morgan Spurlock's Super Size Me documentary film, I still like a sneaky visit to McDonald's for a breakfast. I love a sausage and egg McMuffin and a cheesy bacon flatbread with a double portion of hash browns. And McDonald's coffee isn't too bad!
But my favourite fast food restaurant chains are Subway and Greggs. Greggs is very British and I suspect it hasn't made its presence felt beyond these shores. But Greggs, headquartered in Newcastle in the North East of England, serves up decent and relatively cheap fast food, far from junk food - its sausage rolls are legendary here.
Below is a poll where you can anonymously select your most favourite kind of fast food. Unfortunately only one pick is allowed in the poll.
Given that almost any food can be served fast, it was quite difficult to decide the maximum of 20 poll options but unfortunately there was no room in the poll for: aloo tikki, bacon butty (bacon sandwich), baked beans, bao/baozi buns, batter bits, Bitterballen, bocadillo de calamares, chaat, cheese bites, cheese fritter, chip butty (chip sandwich), chole bhature, Cornish pasty, crêpe/galette, curry, curry sauce, dak-kkochi, dhokla, dim sum, dumplings (eg gyoza/jiaozi, momos, wontons), enchiladas, fajitas, falafel, fish cake, gravy, halloumi fries, hog roast roll, hot roast beef sandwich, Jamaican patty, kushikatsu, loaded fries, masala dosa, mushy peas, Pad Thai, pav bhaji, pie, potato fritter, potato wedges, rib meat rolls, rice, samosa, sausage rolls, sausage sarnie (sausage sandwich), sotteok sotteok, steak slices, takoyaki, tempura, toasted sandwiches (aka toasties), tteokbokki, twigim, vada pav and yakitori.
I think burgers will win the poll, with fried chicken, nachos, pizza and tacos tailing behind.
I want to thank @EnigmaInitiative for her advice in compiling this poll. Obviously, any mistakes with the poll are my mistakes unless 'other' wins!
Please see the first comment below to see what has won each battle of the food and drinks so far.

Blakes lottaburger with cheese and green chile......New Mexico's Blakes only in New Mexico can you get Blake's burgers...great fries and awesome shakes and my favorite cherry lime soda......Yum
Blake's burgers sound great.
@spunkycumfun it's been a couple of years since i've been to New Mexico to have my favorite..... Sonic has great burgers to....they also have my favorite cherry lime soda....awesome shakes 2
@Naughtydaddy2112 We don't get Sonic here in Britain.
I haven't ate fast food since 90's It's all unprocessed or minimally processed food for me and I can honestly say I don't miss it.
I wouldn't miss fast food if it disappeared.
NONE
Slow food is much better than fast food.
We don't eat that stuff.
Fast food generally isn't the healthiest food to eat.
@spunkycumfun In the United States it is poison.
@RavenMoon696 I suspect it's not much better here.
@spunkycumfun I've been hearing that most other countries don't allow a lot of the crap our corrupt so called FDA allows in our food.
@RavenMoon696 I can only comment about Britain. But a recent proposed free trade deal between America and Britain collapsed over chlorinated chicken. America wanted to export it. Britain didn't want to import it.
@spunkycumfun Most of the food here is screwed up one way or another. We buy our meat from a local family that has a farm and does their own meat, but they are becoming harder to find. My thoughts are big drug companies want you sick so they can give you one of the drugs that is basically going to give you other bad conditions. Nothing is made to cure you here just make you sicker and cover up what your original problem was so they can put you on more drugs that make you sicker.
@RavenMoon696 At least we have the NHS here. There's no incentive for the NHS to make us sick as it's struggling to keep up with things!
I voted for fried chicken because we do not make fried chicken at home. Though to be fair, we don't go to fast food for it either. We seek local restaurants that offer a delicious product.
What are your most and least favourite kinds of fast foods? Fav would be tacos. Least fav would be fish.
How often do you eat fast food? Less than once a week unless we are traveling.
What is your favourite fast food restaurant chain? I'm with Pagan - Braums makes a great bacon burger. McDonalds has the best fries. And I have a key chain cone to get a free frosty at Wendys with any purchase for the year. Yum!
McDonald's fries don't seem to agree with me. I always want a nap after eating them.
Steamed fish
We don't get steamed fish as fast food here. It's only fried fish here.
I had to cut down on dairy this year so anything you can put cheese on is good. Typically cheeseburgers though.
Cheeseburgers rule!
@spunkycumfun Indeed
My favorite fast food is a cheeseburger with crispy bacon, ketsup and a slice of grilled onion on it from a fast food franchise called Culver's.
I like crispy bacon in a burger but the bacon has got to be crispy. Often, at least here, the bacon is hardly cooked and I'm left eating the chewy rind.
You're the second person to mention Culver's, it must be good. Unfortunately Culver's hasn't reached our shores.
@spunkycumfun If the bacon is not crispy it can ruin the whole burger. Culver's is a place that started out near Madison. Not sure how many states it has spread to. The have a very good burger seared to perfection. I think the actual name is Culver's Frozen Custard. They do an ever changing Flavor of the Day on that. In my opinion they also have the best fried cheese curds bar none.
@justskin1 I just wish Culver's would open a branch in Nottingham!
@spunkycumfun If they did I would love to visit it and buy you a burger with a side of fried cheese curds. Have you ever had them?
@justskin1 I've never had cheese curds.
@spunkycumfun They are delicious! Wait! Never had cheese curds or never had battered and deep fried cheese curds?
@justskin1 Though we make a lot of cheese here, cheese curds have never been on the menu.
@spunkycumfun Well, Wisconsin is the cheese state and one can get really fresh cheese curds from many a local cheese maker. Some here claim if the cheese curd doesn't squeak when you bit it it is not fresh enough.
@justskin1 My grandfather made cheese and he'd feed the cheese curd to his pigs!
I try to avoid fast food. Probably the place I hit up the most is Lee Ann Chin, which is a regional chain of Chinese restaurants. You might not consider it fast food, but the food is behind the counter in steam trays ready to be dished up, not made to order.
Second place is a hot chicken franchise in the neighborhood. They have deep fried chicken tenders served alone or in a bun, spice level 1-5.
That is fast food. Any food quickly served up is fast food in my book.
What are your most and least favourite kinds of fast foods?
Least favorite anything Vegan I would have to say. My favorite would have to be Del Taco's Del Taco it's so delicious especially the Double Beef and Cheese Del Taco's.
How often do you eat fast food? We don't eat it often as it's gotten really expensive here. And they don't give a lot of coupons like they used too.
What is your favourite fast food restaurant chain? I would have to say Del Taco is my favorite fast food restaurant chain. But Popeye's Chicken is also a great fast food restaurant chain too.
This is another great battle my friend, I hope your Friday is a great start to an even more wonderful weekend..
I wish there were more Mexican/Tex Mex fast food restaurants here. They certainly beat McDonald's and Burger King.
I actually like KFC...grew up on the stuff. Granted, Church's is way better. Maybe your KFC's don't use the correct 11 herbs and spices? Could it be different chickens make the difference?
I'm not sure whether KFC is different here than in America. I stopped eating KFC after seeing a documentary how near-eat-by-date chicken is reconstituted in Amsterdam and sold to fried chicken fast food restaurants here.
@spunkycumfun Ew. That would turn me off as well. Thank goodness we have poultry inspectors and the USDA here.
@SirGoingdown A recent trade deal was proposed between America and Britain but talks broke down over chlorinated chicken which we wouldn't allow in.
@spunkycumfun again, ew. I don't eat much fast food these days to be honest. The best burgers in (my) town are at the local bar, and I can get poutine on the side.
@SirGoingdown Poutine can't be got here or at least I've never come across it.

Rarely eat out. When do. Taco 🌮 Taco Belle
There aren't many Taco Bells here.
@spunkycumfun bummer
@bignicktx Or maybe a blessing. More room for Indian restaurants!
My best so called fast food was the original McDonald's French fries. They were made out of fresh potatoes at each restaurant early morning. When the fries were cooked , they were cooked in beef talo , not in vegetable oil. There is a big difference in flavor and crispness. To bad the customers today will not enjoy the those old school McDonald French fries.
I probably bever ate the old-style McDonald's fries being in Britain.
cheeseburgers but I also like pizza
I wonder whether you can get a cheeseburger pizza!
fast food is junk... I love to spend time and cook for my special friends
Freshly cooked food is much better than fast food.
we don't eat fast food.
Fast food isn't the best food to eat. Thanks for stopping by.
Grilled Chicken sandwiches. Not the mystery meat version one can get at a Fast Food restaurants. Interestingly, the best two I have had were from Hospital cafeterias grills. Everything was fresh and they weren't over cooked.
That's good someone one speaking up for hospital food. Thanks for stopping by,
Spicy chicken sandwich lol
That sounds good. Thanks for stopping by.
Erm, my fave is very much a muff-burger: her lovely muff with a constant slathering from my tongue, then with a copious cream topping, all sandwiched between her lithe thighs.
Then we would go down your list between each of the courses of the above 🤷🏻♂️.
I think that item would be a lot of people's favourite food item!
Chipolte
There are no Chipotle restaurants near me or maybe even in Britain.
Taco's for two two girls in a hot 69.
Sounds like a good choice.
No fast food for me
That's the healthy way.
some good chices but i prefer PUSSY
Japanese fast food would be beef bowls (牛丼/gyudon). It's quick and convenient. There are a couple of burger chains founded by in Japan, Mos Burger and Freshness Burger. Since the price of fast food chain burgers are getting much more expensive than they used to be, I prefer to go to a decent restaurant and order a wagyu burger and support a mom and pop shop over chains and franchises.
Fast food is increasingly no longer cheap food.
