Muffins:
In THE BATTLE OF WATER, tap water won, with spring, purified and well water coming next in the poll.
It's now the turn of muffins to do battle. Originally I was going to do a poll on cakes. But like biscuits, cheeses and confectionery (that's candy or sweets), I soon realised that such a poll wouldn't work. Not only are there are far too many different cakes to consider, but popular cakes vary widely from country to country. Who outside Britain likes or even has heard of an Eccles cake, a cake named after a Lancashire town in England? A cake poll, if it was to be meaningful, would be only about cakes that Americans eat and I'm not the best person to conduct that poll. So instead I decided focus down and just conduct a poll on muffins as a cake.
This poll is only concerned with American muffins and not with English muffins. English muffins are a type of flatbread whereas American muffins are a type of quickbread. English muffins are made differently than American muffins, they are much flatter in appearance (think crumpets, and who doesn't like a bit of crumpet on the side?), and they tend to be unsweeetened.
Though focusing on American muffins, the poll is only concerned with single flavours of muffins, whether savoury or sweet, and not with combinations of flavours. So there are no banana nut, Black Forest, cheesecake, mint chocolate and pizza muffins as poll options.
I haven't got a clue what the difference is between a muffin and a cupcake (or even a bun), but at a guess I'd say it's about size and shape. But I don't think such a distinction being made will affect voting, so I won't bother distinguishing a muffin from a cupcake. That'll also keep this post shorter!
My favourite flavours of muffins are apple, apricot, banana, blackberry, blackcurrant, caramel, cheese, cherry, chocolate, cinnamon, gooseberry, honey, lemon, nut, orange, plum, poppy seed, raspberry, rhubarb and toffee, with blueberry being my most favourite muffin flavour of muffins - no wonder they're sometimes called 'to die for' muffins! The demand for blueberries is skyrocketing here; supermarkets are struggling to supply the demand.
I do like the Echo Beach hit song by Martha and the Muffins but I guess those Canadian muffins don't count in this poll.
Blueberry muffin:
My least favourite muffin flavours would be many savoury flavours, especially aubergine, beetroot, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, courgette, parsnip, pepper and turnip. If I wanted a savoury muffin, I'd go for an English muffin.
However, the worst flavour for American muffins in my book is coffee; I love to drink but not eat coffee!
What are your most and least favourite flavours of muffins?
Have you ever made your own muffins to eat?
I've never made my own muffins. In fact, I've only ever made one cake in my life, a chocolate potato cake. It was delicious; the added mashed potato gave the chocolate cake moisture without adding to the taste of the cake.
Below is a poll where you can anonymously select your most favourite flavour of muffins. Unfortunately only one pick is allowed in the poll.
Given any food can be put in a muffin, I was struggling to get my longlist of 100 options down to a shortlist of 20 options. Unfortunately there was no room in the poll for: apricot, aubergine/eggplant, avocado/alligator pear, bacon, basic/plain, beetroot/beet, blackberry, blackcurrant, bran, broccoli. Brussels sprout, butterscotch, cabbage, caramel, carrot, cauliflower, celery, chilli/jalapeΓ±o pepper, chive, cinnamon, coconut, cornbread/corn/sweet corn, courgette/zucchini, cucumber, date, egg, elderflower, fig, fudge, gooseberry, grape, grapefruit, ham, honey, horseradish, Irish soda bread, Kiwifruit/Chinese gooseberry, leek, licorice, lime, loganberry, mango, marshmallow, melon, mint (including peppermint), mushroom, mustard, nougat, oatmeal, onion, papaya, parsnip, passionfruit, pear, pepper/bell pepper, pineapple, plantain, plum (including damson), pomegranate, potato, prawn/shrimp, pulled beef, pulled pork, pumpkin, radish, raisin (including Zante currant), redcurrant, rhubarb, rice, salmon, sausage, sour cream, spinach, star fruit, sultana, sweet potato, tomato, turnip, vanilla (including custard), yam, and yogurt.
I think it'll be a two-way fight between blueberry and chocolate with blueberry just edging the win in the poll. I think banana and lemon will fight it out for third place.
I want to thank @EnigmaInitiative for her advice in compiling this poll. Obviously, any mistakes with the poll are my mistakes unless 'other' wins!
Please see the first comment below to see what has won each battle of the food and drinks so far.
PS. English breakfast tea has belatedly picked up two more votes to overtake green tea and win the THE BATTLE OF THE TEAS. Also barbecue sauce has belatedly picked up two more votes to overtake ketchup and win the THE BATTLE OF THE CONDIMENTS.

Guess my fav muffin is savory Spunky - Feta and spinach, must be hot and melted butter! If I were to pick another, then muesli or bran. Oh, and to tell you as regards your "Battle of Water", I usually just drink tap water, def the easiest and I'll always have it!
I've never had a savoury American muffin.
Tap water won the battle of water.
My two go-to muffins are corn and blueberry. I didn't see corn as an option, nor did I read through comments.π
Corn didn't make it as an option. I can only have 20 options. However, I did mention corn as one of many that didn't make the shortlist.
I've never eaten a corn muffin.
@spunkycumfun Never? Now that is shocking π
@CuteBBW1973 In fact, I've never even seen corn muffins in a shop or cafe.
@spunkycumfun Now that is shocking. I've never been to the UK...so maybe a good thing to kn9w if I ever do travel there π€
@CuteBBW1973 I'm just warning you, no corn muffins here. Also there's no ass here!
@spunkycumfun Thanks for the fair warning! And umm...I'm sure there is some ass in the UK if one looks intently enough π
@CuteBBW1973 Ass is a donkey here. We say arse, though I must admit ass is used commonly to mean arse.
I usually get muffins at Costco if I'm craving any. I don't do much baking anymore.
You're the second person to mention Costco. Costco aren't big here but then again muffins aren't so big here as in America. Is there a link?
What are your most and least favourite flavours of muffins? I love the muffins I make with tiny chocolate chips and cinnamon. They are so soft and tender. Least fav ... store bought, dried out muffins. I'm not sure I have ever had a flavor I didn't like.
Have you ever made your own muffins to eat? Yes!! I bake the best muffins ever. Go to Sallys baking addiction dot com and search for her master muffin recipe. It is amazing!!!
I'm sure your muffins are great to eat.
One can never go wrong with chocolate, but corn muffins are good too
Chocolate is always a good choice. I've never had a corn muffin.
@spunkycumfun I had to look up why they are called corn muffins. Cornmeal is the reason.
@njfitguy1 Thanks for letting me know. Cornmeal is what I used to feed the chickens on the farm!
Not much into muffins, but I would say apple flavour
I think muffins are more of an American than a European thing!
Oat bran is my fav for medicinal purposes. lemon for enjoyment. least fav would be any of the cheese ones. To me....muffins need to be a bit sweet..~
Lemon muffins are great. It's funny, well I find it a bit funny, that American muffins are sweetened and English muffins aren't. Does that mean Americans are sweeter than the English?!
@spunkycumfun It means we have a bad sugar addiction.
@PonyGirl1965 We have a sugar tax here. It's a tax on soft drinks with a high sugar content.
@spunkycumfun I gave up soft drinks years ago. I wonder if our gov't specifically taxed them if people would still guzzle them? I'm betting yes. They put a big tax on cigarettes and people still smoke.
@PonyGirl1965 What happened here is that soft drink companies reduced the sugar content to keep prices low, so the tax has worked in that there's less sugar consumed.
Another great battle here, I love Poppyseed muffins they are my favorite. Then blueberry and chocolate. I am not a fan of Banana Muffins for sure. There are many that you listed here that I have not heard of before but would be interested in trying.
I hope your enjoying your favorite ones today..
Poppy seed muffins are great. Banana muffins seem to divide opinion.
Blueberry first, apple second. Only because they are more difficult to find
Apple muffins aren't common here in Britain but they are great to eat.
@spunkycumfun only place I have found them was Costco Warehouse. I don't know if the Costco's in the UK have them
@jdlover221 Costco isn't big here.
@spunkycumfun I looked to see if there were locations in Britain before making the commit, there are a few, but not like here in the states
@jdlover221 As you say, there are a few Costco stores here but not many.
Almost everywhere here in the U.S. you will find the Bran Muffin next to any other option offered. The thinking being it will be the healthier option, but that all depends on the bakers use of sugar. As a professional baker I made more than a few muffins in the past. As a consumer, muffins are often too sweet for my tastes. That said, a Blueberry muffin without too much sugar can be satisfying.
I've never had a bran muffin.
@spunkycumfun And still healthy...!
@redswallow777 I used to eat a lot bran flakes as a breakfast cereal.
My number one is blueberry.
Great minds think alike!
