Why fish, tho? đ¤
I found a fairly complicated explanation:
The origins of âApril Fish Dayâ in France date back to medieval times. One theory revolves around the fact that until 1564, New Yearâs Day was celebrated on March 25 in Europe. (Which makes senseâspring is a time of new beginnings, so why wouldnât it mark the start of the new year?) By some accounts, these celebrations would last an entire week, culminating on April 1st. But then came the Edict of Rousillon, in which King Charles IX announced a new calendar, what we now know as the Gregorian calendar, which would have the new year start on January 1st. The story goes that some people refused to celebrate the new year in January, and continued to celebrate at the start of spring. Those who clung to tradition instead of adapting to the times became the subjects of ridicule, and ended up on the receiving end of many a joke. People would invite them to parties that didnât exist, or send them gag gifts.
But references to Poisson dâAvril and April Fools predate this event by quite some time. A 1508 poem by French poet Eloy DâAmerval called Le Livre de la Deablerie (The Book of Deviltry) contains what is thought to be the first reference to a âPoisson dâAvril.â The poem includes a line that reads: âMaquereau infâme de maint homme et de mainte femme, poisson dâavrilâ (âinfamous mackerel of many a man and woman, the April fish&rdquo
. Itâs not specified in the poem if the âPoisson dâAvrilâ refers to April 1st in particular, as it could just refer to a foolish person.
Just looking at the post I thought this was from Spunky.
I've never been a big fan of April Fool's Day as some people have used it as an opportunity to play pranks that just really weren't. Maybe I'd have fared better with the fishes.
Yikes! LOL
Hummm, best I can recall from my brief time there, detecting that someone smelled of fish could take a while.
I found this interesting. Thanks for the cultural lesson. I enjoyed reading about what France does on April 1
This is an excellent bit of trivia.
There is also a special treat for the day - chocolate fish!
I used to always partake in April fools when I was in grammar school. Most students and teachers were never suspecting me because I was always quiet and a good student. I really did enjoy the pranks I would pull on them.
It was only yesterday that I learnt that the French celebrate April Fish Day and not April Fool's Day.
