The Archeologist of Hockey Hair

We have a long time tradition here in Minnesota.

1. High school hockey players sport long, outrageous hair. Sometimes dyed, sometimes permed. The weirder the better.
2. During the annual tournament - which is televised OF COURSE - the team members are introduced by having them skate up to the camera. Their little moment of glory! And they try to make the most of it, sometimes with funny results.
3. For years John King has been doing a highlight reel after the tournament, recognizing the best hockey hair. I feel like this has only accentuated the phenomenon. Now players make sure to give their hairdo a little shake or put some extra flair into their skate up to the camera.

Well, I was gratified to see that today the New York Times had an article about all this, including an interview with John King. Let's see if I can make a link work. No promises!

King has coined some funny terms for hockey hair, including "flow", "salad", "lettuce" and "ramen". He has a VERY deadpan monotone delivery on the videos, which is kind of an acquired taste.

This year's video isn't done yet (the tournament finishes tomorrow) but here's one from 2020. Funny, March of 2020 and only a passing mention of hand sanitizer...

I had to laugh at the final question in the NYT's interview:

Do you have hockey hair?

I have good hair, yes. I don’t feel bad saying that, especially for a 50-year-old. I’m hanging in there.

So I had to do an image search. He does have good hair!
