There are such fine lines between those three compatriots. In total, I added up about six or seven minutes, which would have resulted in a completely different conclusion for me. It all began yesterday afternoon as I headed out the door.
A phone call interrupted my exit. It was my brother. Our conversation was brief as he reminded me not to forget the wine, while chiding me for already being late. I laughed as I hung up, grabbed the wine, then dashed downstairs into my car.
Even though I accelerated towards the intersection, I missed the light. "Damn." Those lights were notoriously slow. As I waited, the clouds lifted, and I was blinded by a windshield-wide , low-hanging, winter sun. I reached for my sunglasses, then remembered I'd left them on the kitchen table when I'd taken my brother's call.
"Damn again." I leaned into my glove box for my backup set.
I couldn't find them, but the lights had changed, and I was already halfway down the boulevard; it was pointless to double back. I knew there was no way I'd be driving along the highway totally blind. A quick pit-stop at the Shoppers Drug Mart on the corner would find me a NEW pair of shades. The parking lot was almost empty as I stepped out of my car towards that store.
"Oh, for fuck's sake, Paul."
I'd left my wallet on the front seat. I quickly returned to my car, retrieved my leather pouch and hustled again towards that store. I passed an elderly lady who was about to start her car. I paused for a second as I admired the sheer size of that classic old Cadillac she sat stooped in.
Finally, the front doors.
And THERE was the display of sunglasses over on the right. As I stepped inside, there was suddenly a thundering crash, shattering glass and a cacophany of screams. That Cadillac I'd passed had plowed through the plate glass windows and was now parked twenty feet inside that pharmacy. Glass continued to shower the car in huge chunks.
The old woman driver wasn't hurt, but she looked in shock. And surprisingly, no one in the store was injured either. In fact, there wasn't that much damage inside, except over there — on the right.
All of the swivelling display cases, which once held hundreds of sunglasses, were now buried and crushed underneath the massive weight of that Cadillac's front wheels and engine.
A series of "what ifs" immediately grabbed my throat and shuddered my core. I shook my head in disbelief and thanked "fate" and "destiny" for their benevolence. As I slowly walked back through the parking lot, I realized perhaps, I should simply thank my dumb fucking luck.
Then again, if my brother hadn't called... 😂
... that whole experience played out like a scene from the movie "Final Destination"...

I've had a few really close calls while driving: those were lucky.

Poor lady, wrecking a car like that, which was probably 'the apple of her husband's eye'... The scolding she'd be in for when she got home and told her husband, 'Honey, guess what happened to me?'...
Regarding your question, I believe that we walk all paths, explore all options; there’s no such thing as luck: everything happens in some reality just as real as this one, though not this one... or maybe it is or at times it is.
The luckiest thing that has ever happened to me is undoubtedly meeting my husband. The odds of someone like him existing are tiny, and the chances of us finding each other even smaller. Yet, that possibility unfolded in this reality, though perhaps not in others... Bah! Don't mind me.
Her old Cadillac was built like a tank. Except for some scratches on the paint, there was almost no damage. 😲😂
Each path we choose presents us with multiple options; I'm always grateful when I think ... I've taken the right one. 🤔

@Paulxx001 I'm glad about the Cadillac, it's a beautiful car, and I think I've seen similar ones when I lived in Venezuela, with those sort of cannonball shapes sticking out from the bumper, though that model was already old back then.
As for the other thing you mentioned: if you're happy, it means you took the right path, that's my opinion.

The series of events and "what ifs" must have been quite an emotional journey.
Life can sometimes leave us questioning whether it's fate, destiny, or just plain luck that's guiding us. Personally, I find it a blend of all three—fate and destiny shape our paths, while luck gives us those unexpected twists.

Great story. We've had a few of those kind of incidents in the neighborhood; some of the stores have taken to putting reinforced posts between the parking lot and the plate glass window.
When we went to California for Thanksgiving, the ONE thing I forgot to pack was a pair of sunglasses. HWD's mom came to the rescue and insisted that I take not one, but two of her pairs of sunglasses for the long drive back to MN.
Many places here have similar posts installed. That store didn't, but I imagine it soon will. 😂
I can't drive without glasses. There are some roads and highways here where the low-lying winter sun can blind you for miles and miles. Traffic will slow down, and things can get dicey without a good pair of shades.
Luckily, his mom had spare pairs. 👍
