Yesterday, I was hopelessly stuck, in some gnarly evening traffic. Fortunately, my dial was tuned to the daily sex-talk radio show. The topic was: "Are women bolder than men in the bedroom?"
I always look forward to the open phones — that's when all the crazies get on the air.
The first caller went off the rails and set the theme. He brought up an insect-world example of the female praying mantis. She chomps off the head of her lover and then has sex with him. Did you know that the male can still mate, as nerves in its abdomen control the body?
The next caller cited the jumping spider as another female who eats her suitor. Females can mate only once, so they are very selective: the male has to dazzle her with dance moves. If the female is impressed, the male is allowed to have sex. If not, he gets eaten.
At this point, the radio hosts laughed as they realized they'd lost control of the show.
A first-time caller (...i don't know why they always brag...) brought up green anacondas. They are polyandrous and copulate with multiple males. This is done in a "breeding ball," where more than 10 males gather on a female and may last up to four weeks. By then, the female has most likely done it with many males and eaten more than one.
Not to be outdone, the caller who followed brought up cannibal scorpions (which I knew about) — and octopus. Were you aware that some species of the octopus are also cannibalistic? Females require nutrition to birth their offspring, and once the male is done servicing her, he also serves as the main course.
Traffic began to move, and a caller began telling his story about the first time his wife surprised him with handcuffs and a ball gag. He was just getting to the interesting part when my car went into the Lafontaine Tunnel, and I lost reception.
As I exited that long subterranean passage, and reception was restored, the hosts laughed and concluded, "Sex can be a dangerous game, people. Play safe, and we'll see you all back here tomorrow."
I can only imagine some of the stuff couples get into. I've been tied to a bed, once or twice, with a blindfold secured over my eyes. As I approached the Champlain Bridge, I was grateful for two things. Traffic was clear sailing and...

I'd have to say that my sexually adventurous days are probably in the past. That's not to say I'm totally vanilla but I've learned what I like, don't like, and what I've aged out of.

Interesting how all of the callers were focusing on deadly females of the species - well I suppose it fit in (sort of ) with the topic of, are women bolder. But I would guess there are many other species where it's the males that are violent and er, banned topic-y (grapey?). Even those dolphins that everybody loves so much!

I believe there are rare cases where males may consume females with both the spider and praying mantis species. Same with the Killer Bee, (Africanized honey bee).
