I wasn’t supposed to go out.
Just days after oral surgery, a single stitch in my gum reminding me to be careful, to rest. The dentist’s voice echoed: no alcohol, no straws, no kissing. But then came that text; the kind you cannot ignore, the kind that says come as you are. And just like that, the car was already in the driveway.
The old jazz club was humming when we arrived, the walls practically pulsing with history and horn lines. A seasoned band took the stage, led by a vocalist whose presence filled the room before the first note even landed. He didn’t just sing, he saw us. His gaze moved through the room like a melody of its own, connecting with each listener, inviting us deeper into the sound.
When he slipped into a slow ballad about finding love on Blueberry Hill , I thought of my father; it was one of his favourites. And when What A Wonderful World unfolded, rich and slow, it felt like more than a song. It felt like a hand on my shoulder. I believed every word.
There was an unexpected surprise in the lineup; a female trombonist with fire in her soul and rhythm in her bones. She didn’t just play; she told stories with every note. The crowd leaned in with her, felt every phrase. It was the kind of performance that lingers.
I followed the rules...mostly. We shared glances, laughter, space. A silent understanding pulsed beneath the music: we were there for each other.
There is something sacred about the nights you almost skip, the risks you almost avoid, the memories you almost miss. The music played on, and for once, I didn’t mind breaking the rules...there or afterwards.

Sounds like a wonderful night and I admit I am jealous. Some music can play on your soul with such power and if you have someone to share it with, your souls can join, at least for a while.
The old adage, Rules are meant to be broken, has a lot of truth in it. If you want to fully live your life one much learn which rules to break and more importantly, when and how.

There’s something rare about feeling that kind of shared resonance—like you’ve stepped into the same emotional key, even if just for a few chords. I became a fan of the trombone when I was in the 5th grade where I learned to play it. Through my school years up to my senior year I played in the school bands.
Today I still have love for it particular in the blues , big band and jazz.
@jc_powerman You would have enjoyed the band which featured a New Orleans legend jazz musician. Unbeknownst to us, they were making their 15th annual visit here.
@sexyldy1000 , the trombone was like this one , not the slide one, but the slide one is my favorite.

You know now that you mentioned it, I don't think I have seen live music since the pandemic. your description made me feel like I was there.
when am I tempted to break the rules? I can't think of anything specific, but breaking small rules here and there is the spice of life.

When I'm so desperate to escape the hum drum of my daily life... go to work, come home, take care of the house, rinse and repeat. Sometimes hard to feel like it is even living. Love live music... your evening sounds awesome.

Sounds like a lovely evening you had there and sometimes it's good to break the rules as long as you know your boundaries. As far as breaking the rules that really doesn't pertain to me anymore.
