As the music faded and the tables emptied, I knew it was time to leave the dimly lit bar. Reluctantly, I stood up and he followed, placing a gentle hand on my back to guide me towards the door.
As I stepped outside, the cool night air greeted me and the stars shone brightly, illuminating my path.
A subtle yet expensive cologne wafted through the air, and the man exuded a sense of strength, intelligence, and confidence. Whenever I looked into his eyes, they seemed to ask probing questions and reveal more than I anticipated. His eyes were a deep blue, and they appeared to see everything.
Feeling confused and spooked, I instinctively took a step back as his head dropped forward, and his lips brushed against my cheek.
“I don't know what I am doing here. I have policies about these things,” he said as his lips fell to the hollow of my neck.
The kiss was light and teased me. I did not want it to stop.
He raised his head. “I am not into one-night stands. I am too old for that sort of thing. I have all the things I am proud of in my life. I don't believe in one-night escapism anymore. I don't see the point.”
Before I could respond, he cut me off by brushing his lips over mine. I was startled. I was surprised.
He stopped and lingered for a moment. He held me lightly, giving me plenty of room; it made me both grateful and disappointed.
He whispered in my ear, "I find you interesting. You are not what I expected. You are smart and complicated, and I know you will not go home with me tonight."
“You are right. I will not,” I whispered.
His hands fell from my back as he stepped away.
As I watched him walking towards his car, a shiver ran down my spine and my arms grew cold. I felt an urge to call out to him, but I refrained from doing so.
After watching him drive away, I followed my own rules and drove myself home.
I had no regrets about my decision.
Sometimes not doing something is the best choice.

I try my best to make the right choice. I do still entertain thoughts of what if I chose differently. It keeps my mind active
@PonyGirl1965 It is healthy to think about decisions made. However, finding the right balance can be challenging if we engage too often in “what if’ reflections.

I've made wrong choices, thinking they were right at the time. And I've made what I thought were dubious ones that turned out better than expected. It would be nice to have a crystal ball, but life doesn't come with that option.
@Paulxx001 Life lacks a crystal ball, and our choices often involve uncertainty. Remember the mathematical concept of “chaos theory”: small initial changes can lead to vastly different outcomes over time. Embrace unpredictability, learn from decisions, and appreciate serendipity.
In some situations, I consistently make good choices. In that sort of situation, it really depends on my frame of mind. In my darker hours, I've made some very poor choices over the years. And even as I made them, I knew they were wrong. But I was trying to escape the darkness with anything that could distract me and sex is my drug of choice. I've tried to do better and had therapy to fight some of the darkness, but I'm grateful for the men who have had the strength to protect me from myself at times. Wish more men were like that.

It’s heartening to hear there have been men in your life who have supported and protected you during difficult moments. Their strength and care are invaluable.
And as for your wish for more men like that, I hope that society continues to evolve toward greater empathy, understanding, and support for one another.
At the time I usually think I've made the right choices until the consequences come home!

I notice the gentleman did not ask for your number. That leads me to believe his line about not being into one night stands was just that ... a line. Good call.
I may not always make the best choice but it always seems like the right one, at the time.

Nobody makes the right choice 100% of the time. Hind sight is also very clear. I try to do the right thing most of the time.
I had a similar experience several years back with a bright and enticing woman. We ended up dating within the month that developed into a relationship that lasted ~5 years. It was worth letting things develop. It was much better than if we just followed a first night encounter.
Todays society has too much emphasis on immediate gratification.
