With a nod to my Irish heritage, I cannot let this day pass without acknowledging St. Patrick’s Day. The patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick, left an indelible mark on Christianity. His religious feast day, observed on March 17th, commemorates both his life and his passing.
In Ireland, the holiday’s roots lie in religious observance. St. Patrick, the missionary who brought Christianity to the Emerald Isle, is honored. Pubs were even closed on St. Patrick’s Day until the 1970s. Today, while Irish pubs welcome patrons, many still attend church or make it a family day.
St. Patrick’s Day became a secular celebration of Irish culture when it reached the United States alongside Irish immigrants. These immigrants carried this tradition across the Atlantic. Did you know that Boston held its first St. Patrick’s Day parade in 1737, followed by New York City in 1762? The Chicago River has been dyed green since 1962.
Canada’s first St. Patrick’s Day parade was held in Montreal in 1824 and was organized by the United Irish Societies of Montreal. However, in Toronto, St. Patrick’s Day parades were banned in 1878 after previous parades sparked violence between Catholics and Protestants. Toronto did not hold a parade again until 1988. This year’s celebrations kicked off on Friday in pubs, bars, and restaurants. In the eastern reaches of Canada, St. Patrick’s Day takes on special significance. In Newfoundland and Labrador, it’s a provincial holiday observed on the Monday nearest to March 17th.

I no longer celebrate St Patrick's day but I do try to wear some green. I have not the least bit of Irish in me. As is no doubt true of a goodly percent of people out celebrating the day.

It's right around parade time in MTL and perfect weather for a huge party. Back in the day, three hundred thousand others and I would line the frozen route and try and keep warm. Montreal's devotion to the Irish who first settled here includes a shamrock in the lower right-hand corner of the city flag. 🍀
No, I won't be going this year. My friends and I have moved aside for younger parade watchers. I always enjoyed all the marching bands and floats go by and... What time is it?
