How are you?
Busy few days here. My bitch came fully into season Thursday morning. I woke up to sweep floors and found smears and drops of blood everywhere. A quick check of the dogs revealed no injuries. Rolled her over to find a swollen girl cookie. Sighsss. Extra clean up. Thankfully she is now keeping herself clean again.
It's funny how friends receive that kind of news. American friends are aghast that she is not yet spayed. Over the pond friends smile and remark how she is so precious. Maybe it is just Irish Setter people but spaying and neutering is not popular everywhere. They bemoan how it can alter their coat.
I think the attitudes towards sex are different in other countries. Americans think they are so sexual. Yet television in other countries will show nudity on regular tv. Then there are the countries where no nudity is allowed and any skin showing is super restricted. Our easy access to porn is taken for granted. Other countries are not so casual.
Were you raised with an openly sexual attitude?
Were you raised in a sexually repressed atmosphere?
I was raised Catholic. All things sexual were bad.
Yet when I got pawed by their dirty old friends, I was told to avoid those people. Always my fault, never the mans.

Just FYI - For the average American owner - my opinion is they need to alter their dogs because they are irresponsible humans. I have rescued more dogs than I can ever count. It's crazy. I love animal rescue. And I hate dealing with the people that want to dump the last few puppies on a rescue when I know darn well they will breed that momma dog again when she comes into season. They don't learn because they are not fully responsible for their behavior. If they were forced to vet, feed and raise every animal they produced, they might learn. Don't get me started on the adult or senior dogs that get dumped. Their previous humans should suffer the same fate.

Europeans are no more sexual than Americans I think. It is just that European's take on sexual and skin is so much more healthy than that of most Americans. I was raised Catholic and went to a Catholic Elementary school so things sexual were not talked about but it was certainly implied to be very sinful. In my case that attitude and others were so overdone I rebelled and instead of accepting the crap, starting thinking on my own.
Sorry to hear about the trouble of your bitch coming in heat makes. I have heard that neutering a dog has health affects on them, one being making them more likely to become fat among other things I have wondered if it would be better to do the equivalent of giving the males a vasectomy and the females having their tubes tied. They would still have the healthy effect of the hormones but no puppies. Of course that would likely have the effect of seeing a lot more of dogs humping in the streets. In my opinion that could be a good thing. Make sex a normal thing.
I love vasectomies in dogs. It costs more sadly. And yes, then the boys would still engage in sexual and sometimes aggressive behavior.
Cowboys male is neutered, and he is incredibly fit. Not fat at all. We feed a high protein, raw diet which has kept all our dogs very fit. I have been amazed. Commercial kibble is just not geared for fit dogs.
@PonyGirl1965 I expect that part of the reason so many dogs are overweight is the same reason their owners are. Poor diet and not enough exercise. Being neutered doesn't help though.

My aunt used to use pads on her dog when she came into heat. It was odd but it helped with the mess for sure.
We didn't discuss sex in my household but I could here my mom and step dad yelling at times about it. I knew what was going on but I tried to avoid them the best I could. I think most of my generation learned about sex at school and just society in general.

Usually I tuck my girls in a pair of backwards boys underwear so their tail can go out the fly area. It works great. This one is on me, I missed the signs she was coming into season
My upbringing was fairly traditional (I.e. repressed). I remember right before I went off to college I had a vaccination where you are not supposed to get pregnant for a few months after receiving it. The doctor recommended I go on the pill for that time. My mom did not like that…NOT.ONE.BIT. She thought it meant I was planning on going off to college and having sex right away. (Maybe I was - lol. But it didn’t work out that way).
I didn't need birth control pills to misbehave, LOL!!!

Growing up our parents never made a big deal of celebrating their anniversary like most of the parents of our friends did. My sisters and I thought that was strange but just accepted it. Several years ago my older sister, born in early November of 1950, went to the courthouse and dig some digging. She found they married in April of 1950. (I'll wait while you do the math.)
All of that is to explain why my parents were EXTREMELY closed about sexuality. OH SURE, today getting married when you're just starting to show is no big deal, but in 1950??!! I think my parents (mostly my mother) were going to make it damn sure their kids didn't repeat their "mistakes"!
My mother flipped, I mean FLIPPED, when I commented on her and my fathers marriage date and my sisters birth date. I guess she thought all of us kids were really bad with math, LOL.
Though not raised in a repressed environment, it wasn't an open environment either.

Sex was never talked about growing up, but growing on a cattle farm one new what brought about new babies. Use to raise registered collies and bitch would lay down each morning roll over where could see if she was in season. Hugs and have a great weekend Pony.

Sorta unrelated but, I feel that all humans that are against abortion need to adopt at least one of those babies, as people are pro birth, not pro life be cuz there are soooo many suffering after their birth. Pro life means truly sustaining an equitable n fair chance at......life.
I hear you. I am not anti abortion, I am pro responsibility. I have had a dozen kids live with us thru the years that had a bad home situation. Just because people CAN get pregnant, doesn't mean they SHOULD. Ugh.
I used to have a dog and cat when I was growing up. My dad's philosophy was fix the cat as soon as you can but let the dog give birth at least one before fixing her. Puppies are easier to re-home than kittens are.
Years ago I remember people saying you should let a dog have a litter. That's old school. Its not at all necessary. And irresponsible people should get animals altered asap.
Science has taught us that most animals are better off physically if they can keep their hormones until their body is fully mature. Joints closed. For dogs, we try to wait at least 2 years. Fewer issues with dysplasia.
I'm thankful I can secure my animals and allow them to grow. Though Cowboy was really irritated when she had her first season and I took her out of town away from his intact dog, LOL. Now his boy is neutered so they can be together.
